Coughing is your body's way of keeping your lungs clean and protects them from things that might irritate your airways. Most coughs are caused by minor infections like colds. If your cough becomes persistent, lasting longer than 6–8 weeks, there could be many possible causes, including sinus issues, sleep disorders, or certain medications. However, it might be a sign of something more serious, especially if you experience a change in voice (hoarseness), you feel short of breath, or you keep getting chest infections.1,2

However, certain populations, including Māori, are at much higher risk of developing and dying from lung cancer. It's never too late to start looking after your lungs and learning the symptoms to watch out for. Take the time to check your lung health – early detection and effective treatment are key.3
